Reverse osmosis is a process for purifying water. A pump forces the liquid through a membrane in the opposite direction to that in normal osmosis. Applications include the production of drinking water (including from seawater), boiler feed water for steam boilers, and the purification of certain wastewater and slurry.

Reverse osmosis is a process for demineralizing water by applying pressure to a membrane. Previously, this was done with ion exchangers or distillation. An alternative or post-treatment method is electrodialysis.
